(DDM) — The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nasarawa State Command, has arrested two suspects for alleged illegal possession of firearms in a renewed crackdown on criminal activities within the state.
The arrests, according to officials, were carried out during a targeted operation aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal weapons and enhancing public safety across Nasarawa State.
Command authorities disclosed that the suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence, which led operatives to intercept them in possession of firearms believed to be held without proper authorization.
The NSCDC emphasized that the operation forms part of broader efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and prevent the misuse of weapons that could threaten lives and property.
Officials noted that illegal arms possession remains a major contributor to insecurity, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and communal violence, stressing the need for sustained enforcement actions.
The Command assured residents that it remains committed to maintaining law and order, adding that all suspects found in violation of the law would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted accordingly.
Security analysts have welcomed the development, noting that proactive measures against illegal firearms are critical to addressing rising security challenges in parts of the country.
They stressed that effective intelligence gathering, community collaboration, and strict enforcement of existing laws are essential in preventing the circulation of unauthorized weapons.
Residents in the state have also been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies, as public cooperation is seen as a key factor in combating crime.
Authorities further warned that possession of firearms without legal authorization is a serious offence, carrying significant legal consequences under Nigerian law.
Observers say the arrest highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to tighten control over weapons and reduce the risk of violent incidents linked to illegal arms.
As investigations continue, the NSCDC reiterated its resolve to intensify operations and ensure that individuals involved in unlawful activities are brought to justice.
