ABUJA — The Petroleum Technology Development Fund has commenced a nationwide interview process for 5,885 shortlisted candidates seeking placement in its overseas postgraduate scholarship programme, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s human capital development efforts within the energy sector.

The exercise, coordinated by Petroleum Technology Development Fund, involves candidates drawn from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, reflecting a broad national representation in the highly competitive selection process.

Officials disclosed that the interviews are being conducted simultaneously across designated centres nationwide to ensure transparency, fairness, and accessibility for applicants from diverse geographical backgrounds in Nigeria.

The PTDF overseas scholarship scheme is one of Nigeria’s flagship educational interventions aimed at building capacity in critical areas of the oil and gas industry, including engineering, geosciences, environmental studies, and energy economics.

Established to develop indigenous expertise for the petroleum sector, the Fund has over the years sponsored thousands of Nigerian students to top universities across Europe, Asia, and North America, contributing to workforce development and technological advancement.

According to programme coordinators, the current round of interviews will assess candidates based on academic performance, research potential, leadership qualities, and alignment with national development priorities in the energy sector.

The large number of shortlisted applicants underscores the increasing demand for international education opportunities among Nigerian graduates, particularly in specialised fields linked to energy, innovation, and industrial development.

Education analysts note that such scholarship programmes play a crucial role in addressing skill gaps within Nigeria’s economy, especially as the country navigates a transition toward more diversified and technology-driven industries.

The PTDF initiative also aligns with broader government objectives to strengthen local capacity in the petroleum sector, reduce reliance on foreign expertise, and promote knowledge transfer through internationally trained professionals.

Participants in the interview process have expressed optimism about the opportunity, describing the scholarship as a life-changing platform that offers access to global academic resources and professional networks.

Observers say the programme not only benefits individual recipients but also contributes to national development, as beneficiaries are expected to return and apply their knowledge within Nigeria’s energy and industrial sectors.

The outcome of the interviews is expected to determine the next cohort of Nigerian scholars who will represent the country in leading global institutions, further strengthening Nigeria’s human resource base in the strategic oil and gas industry.
