The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the African Democratic Congress has declared its support for the party’s National Working Committee led by David Mark, amid ongoing leadership disputes within the opposition party.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Publicity Secretary, Nwigbo Samuel, the FCT chapter urged members to prioritise unity and resolve internal disagreements through established party mechanisms rather than resorting to litigation.
The chapter warned that internal divisions could weaken the party and create opportunities for political opponents to exploit.
The group stressed that lasting peace within the party is essential, calling on aggrieved members to embrace dialogue and reconciliation. It also appealed to party leaders at all levels to step in and help restore calm.
The endorsement comes at a time of heightened tension within the party, with rival factions laying claim to leadership.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier withdrawn recognition of the Mark-led leadership following a court order directing the commission to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of a legal challenge.
As part of that decision, INEC removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal, while also declining to recognise Nafiu Bala, who is seeking to be declared national chairman through the courts.
The crisis has spilled into public demonstrations. Earlier on Wednesday, party members and supporters staged a protest in Abuja under the banner #OccupyINEC, accusing the electoral body of actions they claim undermine internal party democracy.
The protest drew several high-profile political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi.
Despite the tensions, the FCT chapter maintained that the party’s broader goal should remain focused on strengthening its structure ahead of future elections, stressing that collective interest must take precedence over individual ambitions.
