(DDM) — The European Union has intensified efforts to boost women’s participation in Nigeria’s political process ahead of the 2027 general elections, following a high-level strategy meeting held in Abuja.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including policymakers, civil society organisations, and development partners, to address the persistent underrepresentation of women in Nigeria’s political space.

Participants at the gathering emphasized the need for deliberate and sustained actions to remove structural, cultural, and financial barriers that limit women’s involvement in politics.

They noted that despite ongoing advocacy, women continue to face significant challenges in securing party nominations, funding campaigns, and accessing leadership positions.

The European Union reiterated its commitment to supporting inclusive governance, stressing that gender equality remains a critical component of democratic development.

According to discussions at the meeting, increasing women’s political participation is essential for achieving balanced representation and strengthening democratic institutions.

Stakeholders highlighted the importance of policy reforms, capacity-building initiatives, and mentorship programmes aimed at empowering women to contest and win elective positions.

They also called on political parties to adopt internal mechanisms that promote gender inclusion, including quota systems and fair nomination processes.

Civil society groups at the forum urged the government to create an enabling environment that protects women from political violence, intimidation, and discrimination.

Observers noted that Nigeria has consistently recorded low female representation in elective offices compared to global standards, raising concerns about inclusivity in governance.

The initiative by the European Union is expected to complement existing efforts by local and international organisations working to close the gender gap in Nigerian politics.

Participants expressed optimism that sustained collaboration among stakeholders could lead to meaningful progress before the 2027 elections.
