US President Donald Trump has warned that he could face impeachment if Republicans lose control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.
Speaking at a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Trump urged Republicans to turn out in large numbers, warning that they would “lose everything” if Democrats took control of Congress.
“I’m going to be impeached. They’re going to impeach me,” Trump said.
Trump, who is the only US president to have been impeached twice, was acquitted by the Senate on both occasions.
He argued that a Democratic victory would threaten his administration’s policies, including tax cuts and immigration measures.
“If we lose, you’re going to lose your border, you’re going to lose your tax cuts, you’re going to lose everything that we’ve done,” he told supporters.
Trump also claimed that taxes would increase, wages would decline and businesses would leave the United States if Democrats gained control of Congress.
Democrats are widely expected to make gains in the House of Representatives, while control of the Senate remains more competitive.
Trump was campaigning in South Carolina for Darline Graham, who was appointed to the Senate in July following the death of her brother, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
He urged voters to treat the midterm elections as though he were personally on the ballot, saying his political influence was at stake.
“What I really want you to do is pretend, please, that I’m on the ballot. Just come and vote,” Trump said.
