Labour Party faction suspends 26 members after leadership crisis deepens

ABUJA — A faction of the Labour Party has announced the suspension of 26 prominent members, intensifying the party’s internal crisis and signaling deepening divisions within its leadership structure.

The development comes amid an ongoing power struggle within the party, with competing factions laying claim to legitimacy following leadership disputes that have lingered since 2025.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the faction led by Nenadi Usman, operating under a caretaker committee, approved the suspension through its National Executive Council and made the announcement public via its official communication channels.

The affected individuals are believed to be loyal to the rival faction associated with Julius Abure, whose leadership has remained a subject of legal and political contention.

The crisis traces back to a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on April 4, 2025, which removed Abure as the national chairman of the party, reshaping the internal power dynamics and paving the way for alternative leadership claims.

Since the ruling, multiple factions have emerged, each asserting control over the party’s structure, assets, and decision-making processes.

The latest suspension is seen by observers as part of efforts by the Nenadi Usman-led group to consolidate authority and sideline perceived opposition within the party.

Political analysts warn that the escalating internal conflict could weaken the Labour Party’s cohesion ahead of future elections, particularly as it seeks to maintain relevance following its strong showing in the 2023 general elections.

The party, which gained national prominence through its presidential candidate Peter Obi, has struggled to maintain unity amid leadership disputes and competing interests.

Critics argue that continued infighting risks eroding public confidence, while supporters of the caretaker committee insist the measures are necessary to restore discipline and order within the party.
