Ghana rolls out fuel subsidies amid rising global prices

The government of Ghana has announced new subsidies on petrol and diesel to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on citizens.

The policy, introduced by the Ghanaian Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, took effect on April 16, 2026.

Under the measure, diesel prices will drop by GH¢2.00 per litre, while petrol will be reduced by 36 pesewas per litre.

Officials say the intervention will run for an initial four weeks, during which authorities will monitor global oil market trends before deciding whether to extend or adjust the policy.

Speaking on Citi FM, ministry spokesperson Richmond Rockson said the move is designed to ease the burden on consumers without creating future financial obligations.

He stressed that, unlike some past interventions, the government does not intend to recover the cost of the subsidy from citizens later.

Instead, he described it as a deliberate sacrifice, with the state absorbing revenue losses to provide immediate relief.

According to Rockson, the government has taken an “innovative” approach to ensure the subsidy remains sustainable over the short term, with expectations that global market conditions could improve in the coming weeks.

However, analysts warn that such measures may strain public finances if extended, potentially forcing the government to make difficult fiscal adjustments down the line.

The decision comes against the backdrop of rising global oil prices, driven in part by tensions in the Middle East and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Several countries, including South Africa, have also introduced similar measures to shield consumers from the surge in fuel costs.
