Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested four suspected members of an armed robbery syndicate during a coordinated sting operation in Ughelli, Delta State.
The arrests were carried out following intelligence reports linking the suspects to a series of robbery incidents that had reportedly terrorised residents and commuters within the Ughelli axis in recent weeks.
Police sources disclosed that the operation, which was executed by tactical units, took place in the early hours of the day after security operatives tracked the suspects to their hideout. The exact time of the raid was not officially disclosed, but authorities confirmed it was a targeted and pre-planned action.
According to preliminary findings, the suspects are believed to be part of a larger criminal network involved in armed robbery activities across parts of Delta State. During the operation, security personnel reportedly recovered items suspected to be proceeds of crime, as well as weapons used in previous attacks.
Residents of Ughelli had earlier raised alarm over increasing cases of robbery, prompting intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering by law enforcement agencies. The successful sting operation is being seen as a response to growing public concern over safety in the area.
A senior police officer involved in the operation stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover other members of the syndicate who may still be at large. Efforts are also being made to determine the full extent of the group’s activities and any possible links to other criminal operations in the region.
The police assured residents that normalcy is being restored and urged members of the public to continue providing useful information that could aid ongoing security operations.
Authorities further reiterated their commitment to tackling crime across Delta State, emphasizing that more targeted operations will be carried out to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety.
The arrested suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, as the police continue their crackdown on organised crime in the state.
