The United Kingdom has expelled a Russian diplomat in response to a similar move by Russia, deepening an already tense diplomatic standoff between the two countries.
The decision, announced Wednesday by Britain’s foreign ministry, follows Moscow’s expulsion of a British embassy official last month.
Russian authorities had accused the official of economic espionage a claim London has firmly rejected.
British officials described the allegations as baseless and part of what they see as a broader pattern of intimidation aimed at their diplomatic staff.
“This behaviour is completely unacceptable, and we will not tolerate harassment of our personnel,” a government spokesperson said.
As part of the response, the Russian ambassador to London was summoned and informed that a Russian diplomat’s accreditation had been revoked.
The identity of the individual was not disclosed.
The UK government also signaled it is prepared to go further if tensions continue to rise, warning that any additional steps taken by Moscow would be treated as escalation and met with a “firm and proportionate” reply.
There was no immediate response from the Russian embassy in London.
The latest exchange highlights the fragile state of relations between the two countries, where diplomatic expulsions have increasingly become a tool of retaliation.
While such moves are not uncommon in international disputes, they often signal a deeper breakdown in trust and communication between governments.
With both sides digging in, the situation risks further deterioration unless diplomatic channels are reopened or tensions ease in the coming weeks.
