JUST IN: US to Deny Visas to Applicants Who Fear Returning Home Countries

The United States Department of State is tightening its visa rules, introducing a policy that could shut out applicants who say they’re afraid to return to their home countries.

Under the new guidance, consular officers have been told to pause visa interviews unless applicants clearly state that they have not suffered harm and do not fear going back home.

Anyone who answers “yes” to either question or refuses to respond will likely have their application denied.

Officials say the change is meant to reduce cases where people misrepresent their intentions during the visa process.

But in practice, it puts applicants in a difficult position, especially those coming from conflict zones or unstable regions.

The updated process now includes two direct questions: whether the applicant has experienced harm in their home country, and whether they fear returning there.

A “yes” response could effectively end the application on the spot.

Critics argue that the rule could block people who might otherwise qualify for asylum but are applying through temporary visas like student, tourist, or business permits as a way to escape danger.

The move is part of a broader tightening of U.S. immigration procedures over the past two years.

Authorities have already expanded social media checks for visa applicants, ended interview waivers for many categories, and introduced financial bond requirements for some travelers from countries with high visa overstay rates.

Applicants from countries flagged for additional scrutiny including Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon may face even closer checks on their financial records and travel history.

The directive takes effect immediately across U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide, raising the bar for millions hoping to secure entry into the country.
