Jamal Musiala Surgery Update: Bayern Munich Reveal Return Timeline After Operation

Bayern Munich have confirmed that Jamal Musiala has undergone a scheduled minor surgical procedure following the conclusion of his FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with Germany, with the Bundesliga champions outlining a clear and structured recovery plan designed to have their attacking talisman ready for the start of the 2026-27 season.

The announcement, made on Sunday July 6, initially sparked concern among Bayern supporters given Musiala’s long and painful injury history over the past twelve months, but the club was quick to reassure fans that the operation was not the result of a new problem sustained in North America, but a pre planned and essential step in his long term medical management.

In an official statement released from Sabener Strasse, Bayern explained that the procedure forms part of the standard protocol following the devastating injury Musiala suffered in the summer of 2025, and that the timing was deliberately chosen to coincide with the post World Cup break to minimize disruption to his preparations for the new campaign.

The news brings a definitive update on one of European football’s most gifted young players as he looks to finally put a traumatic year behind him and rediscover the form that once made him the undisputed future of German football.

Bayern’s medical department revealed that Musiala underwent what was described as a minor routine intervention to address residual hardware and soft tissue management linked to his previous fibula fracture and ankle dislocation.

The club did not disclose the exact nature of the procedure for privacy reasons, but sources close to the team indicate it involved the removal of stabilizing screws inserted during his initial emergency surgery last July, a common final step in the recovery from complex ankle fractures.

Crucially, Bayern stressed that the operation had been scheduled for months and was intentionally delayed until after Germany’s World Cup commitments to allow Musiala to represent his country. The 23 year old had been determined to feature in the tournament despite not being at full match fitness, and the club respected his wish to compete.

According to the statement, the playmaker will now follow a clearly structured plan for pre season rehabilitation and reconditioning. The program will begin with a short period of immobilization and physiotherapy before progressing to individual running and ball work later in July. Bayern’s coaching staff under Vincent Kompany expect him to rejoin full team training in early August, in time to be available for the DFL Supercup and the opening weekend of the Bundesliga.

This proactive approach is designed to ensure Musiala does not miss any significant portion of the competitive season, a major boost for Bayern after a year in which they were forced to cope without their most creative player for long stretches.

To understand the importance of this final surgical step, it is necessary to revisit the horror injury that derailed Musiala’s career trajectory. On July 5, 2025, during the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinal between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain in Atlanta, Musiala suffered a sickening collision with then PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

As Musiala attempted to latch onto a loose ball inside the penalty area, Donnarumma dived at his feet, with his full body weight landing on Musiala’s left ankle. The impact resulted in a fractured fibula combined with a dislocated ankle, an injury so severe that players from both sides were visibly distressed, with Donnarumma himself in tears as Musiala was stretchered off and taken immediately to hospital.

Bayern confirmed the following day that Musiala would require surgery and would be sidelined for between four and six months. He underwent successful initial surgery in Munich and began a painstaking rehabilitation process. His recovery was further complicated in March 2026 when he reported persistent pain in the syndesmotic tendon around the affected ankle, forcing Bayern’s medical team to pause his return to play program for three weeks and adjust his load management.

Despite those setbacks, Musiala worked tirelessly to return ahead of schedule in order to make Julian Nagelsmann’s World Cup squad. He made his competitive comeback for Bayern in late April, featuring as a substitute in three Bundesliga matches and starting the DFB Pokal final defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

His inclusion in Germany’s World Cup squad was met with both excitement and debate. While his talent is unquestioned, his match sharpness was clearly lacking after nearly eight months out. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp sparked controversy before Germany’s opener against Curacao when he suggested on German television that Stuttgart striker Deniz Undav should start ahead of Musiala due to his superior fitness. The comments drew a fierce rebuke from German legend Lothar Matthaus, who accused Klopp of lacking sensitivity toward a player rebuilding confidence after a career threatening injury.

Nagelsmann ultimately showed faith in Musiala, starting him in three of Germany’s four matches at the tournament. He scored his only goal of the competition in the 3-1 group stage win over Curacao, a trademark dribble and finish that reminded fans of his world class ability. However, he struggled to impose himself consistently, and Germany’s campaign ended in bitter disappointment with a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32, a match in which Musiala was substituted after 75 minutes.

At club level, the competition for his favoured number ten role has intensified dramatically during his absence. The emergence of Michael Olise, who joined Bayern last summer and has since become one of the Bundesliga’s most productive creators, along with the arrivals of Luis Diaz from Liverpool and the resurgence of Serge Gnabry, means Musiala will return to a squad where his starting place is no longer guaranteed. Vincent Kompany has publicly called for patience, stating on several occasions that Musiala remains some way off his best form but that his long term future remains central to Bayern’s project.

The club’s hierarchy views this final operation as the closing chapter of his injury nightmare. By clearing up the last remaining medical issue now, Bayern believe they are giving Musiala the platform to enjoy a full uninterrupted pre season for the first time in two years and to finally rediscover the rhythm that saw him score 12 goals and provide 8 assists in the 2024-25 season before his injury.

For Germany and Bayern Munich, a fully fit Jamal Musiala is not just a luxury but a necessity. The next few weeks of rehabilitation will be crucial, but all signs point to the German superstar being ready to lead his club’s charge for domestic and European glory once again.
