Slain Musician’s Mother Demands Death Penalty for Police Officers

Grief and anger have taken centre stage in Delta State following the killing of a young musician, as his mother demands the harshest possible punishment for those involved.

Oghenemine Ogidi, known by his stage names Mene and OG Millan, was shot dead on April 26 in Effurun, Warri. He was 28.

Police say he had been arrested over a suspected attempt to ship a parcel containing a firearm and ammunition.

But what has stirred nationwide outrage is a video showing him handcuffed, pleading for his life before being shot.

Speaking in an emotional interview, his mother, Oghenemine Ogidi’s mother, said no punishment could bring her son back—but insisted those responsible must face justice.

“I know it won’t return my child to me,” she said, “but at least I’ll know the country tried.”

She is calling for all officers present at the scene to be prosecuted, not just the one who pulled the trigger. In a statement that reflects the depth of her pain, she said she wants them to face the same fate her son suffered.

Her demands also extend beyond the officers. She urged authorities to investigate everyone connected to the case, including those who transported the parcel and officials at the motor park where the arrest took place.

The officer identified in the shooting, Nuhu Usman, has since been arrested and moved to Abuja. Police authorities say he will face a murder charge.

The Delta State Police Command has described the incident as an extrajudicial killing, with Commissioner Yemi Oyeniyi offering condolences to the family and promising that justice will be pursued.

Still, for many Nigerians, the case has become a symbol of wider concerns about police conduct fuelled by the disturbing footage that continues to circulate online.
