10 Million Nigerians Join NDC Within 24 Hours of Obi’s Defection — NDC Chieftain

A senior figure in the Obi-Kwankwaso political movement has claimed that millions of Nigerians rushed to register with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) almost immediately after Peter Obi switched parties.

Dr. Adefolaseye Adebayo, who coordinates the movement in the South-West, said about 10 million people signed up within 24 hours of Obi’s defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC.

Obi had dumped the ADC on Sunday alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, a move that has reshaped the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development has also stirred debate, with critics arguing that leaving the ADC could weaken Obi’s presidential chances. But Adebayo pushed back on that narrative during an interview on Arise TV.

According to her, Obi’s appeal goes far beyond party lines.

“His support base cuts across every region of the country,” she said. “This isn’t just about a political platform  it’s about his personality and what he represents.”

She pointed to the reported surge in NDC registrations as evidence that Obi still commands significant grassroots backing nationwide.

“Within 24 hours of his move, about 10 million Nigerians registered with the NDC. That tells you everything you need to know,” Adebayo added.

While the figure has not been independently verified, the claim highlights the growing momentum  and controversy  surrounding the new political alignment as the race toward 2027 begins to take shape.
