ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — The United Arab Emirates has confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted missiles and drones launched from Iran, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

The attacks involved multiple waves of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles targeting key infrastructure and maritime routes in the Gulf region.

UAE authorities stated that their defence systems successfully intercepted several incoming threats, although some projectiles reportedly landed near critical facilities, including areas close to major oil infrastructure.

Officials described the development as a “dangerous escalation,” warning that continued attacks could destabilise the wider Gulf region and disrupt global energy supply chains.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between the UAE and Iran, remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints, making any military activity in the area a major international concern.

Security sources indicated that multiple missiles and drones were neutralised during the incident, highlighting both the scale of the attack and the effectiveness of the UAE’s air defence systems.

Despite the interceptions, reports suggest that limited damage occurred in some locations, including minor fires, though no mass casualties have been confirmed.

The escalation comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, raising fears of a broader confrontation that could involve additional regional and global actors.

Military analysts warn that sustained exchanges of missiles and drones could significantly disrupt commercial shipping routes and increase volatility in global oil markets.

International stakeholders have called for restraint, urging both sides to pursue diplomatic solutions in order to prevent further escalation and maintain regional stability.
