UMUAHIA, ABIA — Abia State Governor Alex Otti has approved a feasibility study for the proposed Abia seaport project, directing relevant partners to fast-track assessments to determine the viability of the development.

The decision marks a major step in the state’s long-term economic and infrastructure planning, with officials describing the proposed seaport as a potential game-changer for trade and investment in the South-East region.

The feasibility study is expected to evaluate key factors including environmental impact, economic sustainability, engineering requirements, and logistical feasibility of establishing a functional maritime facility in the state.

Governor Otti emphasised the importance of thorough planning, stating that large-scale infrastructure projects must be backed by credible data and expert analysis before implementation.

He directed technical partners and consultants involved in the project to ensure that the study is completed efficiently and meets international standards for infrastructure development.

The proposed Abia seaport is expected to boost regional commerce by improving access to import and export channels, reducing transportation costs, and enhancing industrial growth.

Economic planners argue that such a facility could significantly transform Abia State into a major commercial hub, attracting both local and foreign investment.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts by the state government to diversify its economy beyond traditional sectors and strengthen infrastructure development.

Stakeholders in the business community have welcomed the announcement, noting that improved maritime access could open new opportunities for manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics.

However, experts also caution that the success of the project will depend heavily on geographic suitability, funding arrangements, and long-term maintenance planning.

Environmental considerations are also expected to play a key role in the feasibility assessment, particularly regarding coastal impact and ecosystem preservation.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to evidence-based development, stressing that no major project will proceed without proper evaluation.

If the feasibility study yields positive results, the Abia seaport could become one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the South-East region in recent years.

As the process begins, attention will focus on the findings of the study and the next steps toward possible implementation of the ambitious maritime project.
