FC Barcelona has taken a major step toward expanding its football development presence in Africa after signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Bayelsa State Government to establish a football academy in Nigeria’s oil-rich South-South region.

The agreement, signed during the grand finale of the 2026 Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament popularly known as the Prosperity Cup, marks one of the most ambitious grassroots football partnerships involving a European football giant and a Nigerian state government in recent years.

The Memorandum of Understanding was formally signed at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, with Bayelsa Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr Daniel Igali, signing on behalf of the state government while FC Barcelona representative, Bernat Villa Garris, signed for the Spanish club. The signing ceremony was witnessed by notable football administrators including former Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick, and NFF Secretary General, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.

The partnership is expected to pave the way for the establishment of a world-class football academy in Yenagoa aimed at identifying, nurturing and developing talented young footballers from Bayelsa State and across the Niger Delta region. Football stakeholders believe the initiative could become a transformative project for grassroots football in Nigeria.

Speaking during the ceremony, Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, described the partnership as a major breakthrough for youth empowerment and sports development in the state. He stated that the collaboration with one of Europe’s biggest football clubs would help channel young talents into productive ventures while reducing social vices among youths.

Governor Diri noted that his administration remains committed to sports development as a key strategy for youth engagement and economic empowerment. According to him, the Prosperity Cup has grown significantly since his administration assumed office in 2020, evolving into one of the largest grassroots football tournaments in Nigeria.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the ongoing 30,000-capacity stadium project in Bayelsa before the end of 2027, stressing that sports infrastructure remains central to the state’s development agenda.

Officials of FC Barcelona expressed satisfaction with the football potential discovered in Bayelsa during their visit to the state. Bernat Villa Garris stated that the club had already observed significant talent and enthusiasm among young footballers in the region and expressed optimism about the future of the partnership.

Barcelona representatives also conducted facility inspections across several locations in Yenagoa ahead of the proposed academy project. Reports indicate that the officials toured the Bayelsa Medical University hostels, the Sampou campus facility and the ongoing stadium project to assess their suitability for football development programmes and youth training initiatives.

The academy project is expected to integrate football training with academic education, following the model widely used by FC Barcelona’s renowned youth system known globally for producing elite talents such as Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta and Xavi Hernández.

Earlier in the year, organisers of the Prosperity Cup announced that the partnership with Barcelona would also include UEFA-certified coaching clinics for grassroots coaches in Bayelsa and other parts of Nigeria. The coaching programme is expected to expose Nigerian coaches to Barcelona’s football philosophy, player development techniques and modern training methodology.

The programme reportedly includes technical workshops, practical training sessions and scouting opportunities for young players between the ages of 17 and 21. Several football academies across Bayelsa were selected to participate in the scouting programme supervised by Barcelona officials.

Football analysts believe the collaboration could significantly improve grassroots football development in Nigeria if properly managed. Many observers have long argued that Nigeria possesses enormous football talent but lacks adequate youth development structures capable of transforming raw potential into professional success.

The Prosperity Cup itself has become one of the country’s fastest-growing grassroots football competitions. This year’s edition reportedly featured more than 227 male teams alongside female and para-sports categories, highlighting the rapid expansion of football participation across Bayelsa State.

The male category winners, Okoroma United from Nembe Local Government Area, emerged champions after defeating Akinima Biogbo 1-0 in the final and received a prize of N40 million. In the women’s category, Active Ladies defeated defending champions Afini Ladies to secure the top prize.

Sports development experts say the partnership between FC Barcelona and Bayelsa State could serve as a model for future collaborations between international football institutions and African governments seeking to develop local talent through structured youth programmes.

The agreement also reflects the growing global interest in African football talent, with several European clubs increasingly investing in scouting networks, training academies and youth development initiatives across the continent.
