Nigeria’s sprint hurdling sensation, Tobi Amusan, is preparing for another defining moment in her illustrious athletics career as she leads Team Nigeria to the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.

The championship, scheduled to hold at the University of Ghana Sports Complex, is expected to attract some of the continent’s finest track and field athletes, with medals, continental pride, and qualification opportunities for global competitions all at stake. For Amusan, however, the tournament represents more than just another appearance on the African stage. It is an opportunity to secure a historic third African title in the women’s 100 metres hurdles and further cement her place among Africa’s greatest athletes.

The Nigerian star enters the competition carrying enormous expectations after years of dominating African sprint hurdles and consistently competing at the highest level internationally. Since emerging as one of Nigeria’s brightest athletics talents, Amusan has grown into a global icon whose achievements have inspired a new generation of athletes across the continent.

Amusan first announced herself as Africa’s leading hurdler during the 2018 African Championships held in Asaba, Delta State, where she thrilled home supporters by winning gold in the women’s 100m hurdles. She also contributed to Nigeria’s victory in the women’s 4×100 metres relay, making it one of the most memorable performances of the tournament.

Four years later, she repeated the feat at the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius, once again proving her dominance in the hurdles event while helping Nigeria capture another relay gold medal. Although she did not participate in the hurdles event at the 2024 edition in Douala, Cameroon, she still featured prominently in the relay team and added another continental gold medal to her growing collection.

Her return to the individual hurdles race in Accra has therefore generated excitement among athletics enthusiasts who believe she remains the athlete to beat in the event.

The 28 year old athlete has continued to elevate Nigerian athletics globally since becoming the first Nigerian world champion in athletics history. In 2022, she stunned the athletics world after setting a women’s 100 metres hurdles world record of 12.12 seconds at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States. The remarkable achievement not only established her as the fastest woman in history over the hurdles but also placed Nigeria firmly in the spotlight of global athletics.

Since then, Amusan has remained one of the most recognised African athletes on the international circuit, competing regularly in the Diamond League and other elite competitions against the world’s top sprinters and hurdlers.

Despite facing intense competition from rising African talents and established international stars, observers believe her experience, technical discipline, and explosive speed give her a major advantage heading into the championship in Ghana.

Nigeria is also expected to rely heavily on several other top performers as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria aims for a strong finish on the medals table. Athletes such as Favour Ashe, Rosemary Chukwuma, Enoch Adegoke, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and Patience Okon George are among those tipped to deliver impressive performances for Team Nigeria during the competition.

Officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria have expressed optimism about the country’s preparations and medal prospects, describing the championship as an important platform for athletes to secure qualification standards for future global events, including the World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

Sports analysts believe the tournament will also serve as an important assessment of Nigeria’s readiness ahead of major international competitions later in the season.

Beyond the medals and records, Amusan’s presence in Accra is expected to attract significant attention from athletics followers across Africa. Her consistency, resilience, and professionalism have made her one of the continent’s most respected sporting figures.

As the championship begins in Ghana, millions of Nigerians will once again look toward their track queen with hopes that she can deliver another golden performance and continue writing her name into the history books of African athletics.
