China has criticised the United States over its decision to file murder charges against former Cuban president Raul Castro, accusing Washington of using its legal system as a political weapon against Cuba.
Speaking in Beijing on Thursday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China strongly opposes what he described as the US “abusing judicial means” to pressure Havana.
“The United States should stop using sanctions and its judicial system to suppress Cuba,” Guo told reporters during a regular press briefing. He also urged Washington to avoid threats or the use of force against the island nation.
The reaction came a day after the US announced criminal charges against Castro, escalating tensions between Washington and Havana.
China, one of Cuba’s closest diplomatic partners, has consistently criticised US sanctions and policies targeting the Caribbean country. Beijing has repeatedly called for an end to measures it says are aimed at isolating Cuba politically and economically.
The latest dispute adds another layer to already strained relations between China and the United States, as both countries continue to clash on several geopolitical issues.
