KANO, KANO STATE – The Kano State Government has intercepted counterfeit pharmaceutical products worth about N200 million in a major enforcement operation targeting the circulation of fake and unapproved medicines across the state.
Authorities said the seizure forms part of intensified efforts to protect public health and eliminate the distribution of substandard drugs that pose serious risks to residents.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regulatory enforcement and ensuring that only approved and safe medicines are available in markets and healthcare facilities.
Major Raid Targets Illegal Drug Supply Chain
According to officials, the operation was carried out following intelligence reports and surveillance activities that uncovered networks involved in the distribution of counterfeit drugs.
The seized items reportedly include unregistered pharmaceuticals, expired medications, and falsely branded products suspected to have been smuggled into the state through illegal channels.
Authorities described the development as one of the largest recent interceptions in the state’s ongoing campaign against fake drug circulation.
Government Vows Stronger Enforcement
State officials warned that individuals and groups involved in the sale or distribution of unapproved medicines will face strict legal consequences.
They added that regulatory agencies have been directed to intensify monitoring of pharmacies, patent medicine stores, and drug distribution channels across Kano State.
The government also emphasized that safeguarding public health remains a top priority, especially in preventing avoidable deaths and complications caused by counterfeit medications.
Public Health Concerns Rise
Health experts have repeatedly warned that fake drugs contribute significantly to treatment failure, drug resistance, and increased mortality rates, particularly in developing regions.
They noted that enforcement actions like the Kano seizure are critical to restoring public confidence in the healthcare system.
Collaboration With Security Agencies
Authorities said the crackdown will continue in collaboration with security agencies and national drug regulatory bodies to dismantle supply networks involved in pharmaceutical counterfeiting.
They also urged residents to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and report suspicious drug-related activities.
Looking Ahead
The Kano State Government pledged sustained surveillance and enforcement operations aimed at eliminating fake drug markets and protecting citizens from harmful medical products.
Officials say further arrests and prosecutions are expected as investigations into the seized drugs continue.
