LAGOS, NIGERIA – The South West Youths Forum has called for urgent and coordinated action to address the rising wave of insecurity across the South West region, warning that continued attacks could further threaten lives, economic activities, and social stability.
The group expressed concern over increasing incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes reportedly affecting communities across several states in the region.
The South West Youths Forum urged governors in the South West to intensify security measures and strengthen collaboration with federal security agencies to curb the growing threat.
Rising Security Concerns Across The Region
According to the group, recent developments indicate a disturbing rise in criminal activities, particularly in rural communities and highways where residents and travellers have reportedly become more vulnerable.
They warned that the situation, if not urgently addressed, could escalate into a broader security crisis with serious implications for agriculture, trade, and regional mobility.
Call For Coordinated Government Response
The forum urged state governments to adopt a unified regional security strategy that prioritises intelligence sharing, rapid response mechanisms, and community policing initiatives.
They also called for improved funding and equipment for security agencies operating within the region to enhance operational effectiveness.
Youth Engagement In Security Efforts
The group stressed the importance of involving young people in security frameworks, noting that youth participation in intelligence gathering and community vigilance could help reduce crime rates.
They further encouraged traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organisations to work closely with security agencies to identify and report suspicious activities.
Appeal For Federal Support
The forum also appealed to the Federal Government to increase support for security operations in the South West, particularly in areas experiencing repeated attacks.
They emphasised that a coordinated approach between federal and state authorities remains critical to restoring peace and stability.
Looking Ahead
The group reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for improved security and urged stakeholders to act swiftly to prevent further deterioration of the security situation in the region.
