Former Minister of Transportation, Chief Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi has challenged the long claim that President Bola Tinubu outrightly made the late President Muhammadu Buhari president in 2015.
Amaechi said Mr Tinubu, who was then the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) played a little role in the emergence of Buhari.
While speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Amaechi, a presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) said he fought most of the political battles that led to the victory of the APC in the 2015 presidential election.
Recall that Mr Tinubu had, in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, claimed he played a decisive role in Mr Buhari’s emergence as president, insisting that it was his turn to lead the country.
But Amaechi, who served twice as director-general of Mr Buhari’s presidential campaign, said he refrained from countering Mr Tinubu’s claims at the time because he was still serving in the cabinet and feared being removed from office.
“When I was a minister, Tinubu was claiming he made Buhari president, and I couldn’t respond because that was suicidal. Buhari could have fired me because I was still serving as a minister,” he said.
“Tinubu didn’t make Buhari president. Not only was I the DG of the campaign, everyone knows that I fought all the battles, not Tinubu,” he added.
