SDP Faults INEC Appeal Over 2027 Election Timetable

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The **** has criticised the decision of the **** to appeal recent court judgments relating to the timetable for the 2027 general elections, arguing that the rulings provide greater flexibility for political parties in conducting their activities.

The party expressed disappointment over INEC’s move, maintaining that the judgments offered an opportunity to strengthen internal democracy and allow political organisations sufficient time to prepare for primaries and other pre-election processes.

In a statement issued by its leadership, the SDP contended that the court decisions were in line with democratic principles and could help create a more level playing field for all political parties participating in the 2027 electoral cycle.

According to the party, the judgments would enable political organisations to better organise their affairs, engage members, and conduct candidate selection processes without unnecessary pressure from rigid timelines.

The SDP argued that rather than pursuing an appeal, the electoral commission should focus on implementing reforms capable of improving transparency, voter confidence, and the overall credibility of future elections.

Party officials stated that political parties require adequate time to build consensus, resolve internal disputes, and carry out democratic consultations before presenting candidates for elective offices.

They maintained that the court rulings could contribute to more inclusive participation in the political process and reduce tensions often associated with hurried electoral preparations.

The party further expressed concern that continued legal disputes over election schedules could create uncertainty among stakeholders and distract attention from more pressing issues affecting electoral administration.

INEC, however, has maintained that the appeal is necessary to clarify legal questions surrounding the management of election timetables and the commission’s constitutional responsibilities. The electoral body has consistently argued that clear and predictable timelines are essential for effective election planning and administration.

Political analysts note that disputes over electoral timetables often have significant implications for political parties, candidates, and the conduct of elections. They argue that the eventual outcome of the legal process could influence preparations for the 2027 polls.

Observers also stress the importance of balancing the need for flexibility in party activities with the requirement for certainty and order in electoral management.

The SDP reiterated its commitment to democratic principles and called on all stakeholders to work toward strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system through dialogue, legal clarity, and institutional reforms.

As the matter progresses through the courts, political parties and election observers are expected to closely monitor developments, given their potential impact on preparations for the next general elections.
