Zamfara NYSC Seeks Permanent Orientation Camp Establishment

GUSAU, ZAMFARA STATE — The Zamfara State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called on Governor Dauda Lawal to support the establishment of a permanent orientation camp in the state, citing the need to improve corps members’ welfare and strengthen the scheme’s operational capacity.

The appeal was made during a recent engagement with state authorities, where the NYSC leadership emphasized the long-term benefits of having a dedicated and permanent facility for orientation activities in Zamfara State.

According to the coordinator, the absence of a permanent camp has posed logistical and operational challenges over the years, affecting the efficiency of orientation exercises and the overall experience of corps members deployed to the state.

He noted that a permanent orientation camp would provide a more stable and secure environment for incoming corps members, enabling better coordination of training, mobilisation, and integration into their host communities.

The NYSC official also highlighted that such a facility would contribute to improving the welfare and safety of corps members, particularly in light of security concerns that have occasionally affected deployment and camp operations in some parts of the country.

Beyond corps members’ welfare, the coordinator stressed that the establishment of a permanent camp would have positive ripple effects on local communities, including job creation, infrastructure development, and increased economic activity around the camp area.

He further explained that NYSC camps often serve as hubs of interaction between young graduates and host communities, fostering cultural exchange, community service, and developmental initiatives during the orientation period.

The coordinator expressed appreciation for the state government’s continued support of the NYSC scheme, while urging Governor Lawal’s administration to prioritise the construction of a permanent facility as part of broader efforts to strengthen youth development programmes in Zamfara State.

State officials have previously acknowledged the importance of improving infrastructure for the NYSC scheme, noting that effective orientation exercises play a key role in preparing corps members for their service year.

Observers say the establishment of a permanent camp could enhance the efficiency of NYSC operations in the state while also improving the perception of Zamfara as a more corps member-friendly environment.

The appeal comes as the NYSC continues to seek stronger collaboration with state governments across Nigeria to improve facilities, enhance security, and ensure a more conducive environment for national service participants.

As discussions continue, stakeholders expect further engagement between the NYSC leadership and the Zamfara State Government on possible modalities for the construction and funding of the proposed permanent orientation camp.
