ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigerian Army has called on media practitioners across the country to prioritize accuracy, responsibility, and ethical standards in their reporting, stressing that intelligence gathering and dissemination remain a strategic necessity for national security operations.
The Army made the appeal during a public engagement focused on improving civil-military relations and strengthening collaboration between the armed forces and the media in addressing Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
Military officials emphasized that misinformation or inaccurate reporting could undermine ongoing operations, endanger personnel, and weaken public trust in security institutions. They noted that modern security threats require coordinated efforts between the military, intelligence agencies, and the media to ensure timely and reliable information flow.
According to the Army, intelligence is not a luxury but a critical component of national defence strategy, particularly in the fight against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of internal security threats affecting various regions of the country.
Officials explained that effective intelligence sharing helps security agencies anticipate threats, respond more efficiently to emergencies, and protect civilian populations. They added that operational success often depends on the quality and accuracy of information available to commanders in the field.
The Army further urged journalists to verify information before publication and avoid sensational reporting that could distort facts or escalate tensions within affected communities. It also encouraged continuous training and engagement between military public relations units and media professionals.
In addition, military representatives highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at improving transparency and communication with the public, noting that the Army is committed to building trust while maintaining operational confidentiality where necessary.
The engagement also addressed the growing role of digital media, with officials cautioning that the rapid spread of unverified content on social platforms has increased the risk of misinformation during security incidents.
Media stakeholders present at the event acknowledged the importance of balancing press freedom with national security considerations, while calling for improved access to credible information from official sources to support accurate reporting.
The Army reiterated its commitment to working closely with journalists and media organizations, describing them as key partners in national stability and public enlightenment efforts.
As discussions continue, both parties expressed optimism that stronger cooperation will enhance public understanding of security operations while ensuring responsible journalism practices across the country.
