Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have set fire to a primary school and a secondary school in Kautikari village, located in Chibok Local Government Area.
The latest attack comes barely a month after pupils of Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira-Uba were abducted and remain unaccounted for.
Security sources said the insurgents stormed Kautikari at about 7 p.m. on Saturday, causing panic among residents.
According to one of the sources, no deaths or injuries had been reported as of the time of filing this report, but many residents fled into nearby bushes to escape the attack.
A resident of the community said the terrorists had attacked the village in the past but had not previously targeted public infrastructure.
“They came here months ago, but they didn’t destroy any government property or private buildings. This time, they set the primary school and the day secondary school on fire. It’s something we haven’t seen before,” the resident said.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about the safety of schools and communities in parts of Borno State still grappling with insurgent activities.
Efforts to get a response from the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone could not be completed.
The extent of the damage caused by the fire is yet to be officially determined. However, residents fear the destruction could further disrupt education in a community already affected by years of insecurity.
