US President Donald Trump has announced that a long-awaited peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East is expected to be signed on Sunday, a move he says will immediately reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump said the agreement would mark a major breakthrough in efforts to restore stability to the region.
“The deal is scheduled to be signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is open to all,” he wrote.
The statement, however, appeared to contradict comments from Iran’s foreign ministry, which earlier indicated that no agreement would be signed on Sunday, according to reports carried by Iranian state media.
Trump also claimed that the United States would eventually take possession of Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and oversee its destruction.
“At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the nuclear dust buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran or the United States,” he said.
The US president added that Washington hopes to build a more constructive relationship with Iran and the wider Middle East once the agreement takes effect.
“We look forward to working with Iran and the entire Middle East long into the future,” Trump stated.
Despite the optimistic tone, Trump warned that Iran must fully comply with the terms of the proposed agreement.
“Hopefully, this process will work out quickly, easily and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again,” he said.
Iran has consistently maintained throughout negotiations that it will not give up its right to enrich uranium, a position that remains one of the key sticking points in talks between both sides.
The proposed agreement, if finalized, could ease tensions in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz expected to have significant implications for global oil markets and international shipping.
