LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting healthy living among residents through sports and strategic partnerships, encouraging citizens to adopt active lifestyles as a means of improving public health outcomes across the state.
The government has consistently advocated for the integration of physical activity into daily routines, recognising that sedentary lifestyles contribute significantly to the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Officials have highlighted the role of sports in fostering physical well-being while also promoting mental health, social cohesion, and community engagement.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been a vocal proponent of using sports as a tool for public health improvement, with the administration investing in sports infrastructure and grassroots programmes to make physical activity accessible to all residents. The government has partnered with private sector organisations, sports federations, and community groups to expand opportunities for citizens to engage in regular exercise.
In recent months, the Lagos State Government has organised several sporting events aimed at encouraging mass participation, including walkathons, cycling competitions, and community football tournaments. These events are designed to attract residents from diverse backgrounds and age groups, reinforcing the message that physical activity is beneficial for everyone, regardless of fitness level or socioeconomic status.
The government has also launched a series of public awareness campaigns promoting healthy eating habits alongside physical activity. Residents have been encouraged to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their diets, reduce sugar and salt intake, and stay hydrated. The campaigns have been disseminated through traditional media, social media platforms, and community engagement programmes to reach a wide audience.
Healthcare officials in the state have noted that regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, improve mental health, and enhance overall quality of life. The government has called on employers, schools, and religious institutions to support healthy living initiatives by creating environments that encourage physical activity and wellness.
Lagos State has also partnered with health organisations to provide free health screenings and fitness assessments at various locations across the state, enabling residents to monitor their health status and receive professional guidance on lifestyle modifications.
As the state continues to grapple with urbanisation and lifestyle-related health challenges, the government’s focus on sports and healthy living is expected to contribute to a healthier, more productive population. Residents are urged to take advantage of the available opportunities and make conscious efforts to prioritise their health and well-being. For now, the government remains committed to creating an environment that supports active and healthy lifestyles for all Lagosians.
