Oshiomhole’s NNPC Remarks Must Not Fade Away, Says Analyst

ABUJA, Nigeria — The recent happenings in the Senate at Abuja between Senator Adams Oshiomhole and the senate leadership over the level of rot and decadence at NNPC Ltd. must not be allowed to fade away with the new wave of political tsunamis blowing across the land, plus the existential insecurity of our lives, public affairs analyst Dan D. Kunle has said.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kunle argued that the controversy generated by Senator Oshiomhole’s remarks during the Senate Public Accounts Committee proceedings has once again brought NNPC Ltd. under intense national scrutiny. He described the exchange as a rare moment of legislative accountability that should be sustained rather than allowed to dissipate.

Kunle noted that Senator Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, had raised serious concerns about the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, including allegations of financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and institutional decay. The senator’s comments reportedly sparked a heated exchange with the senate leadership, with some colleagues accusing him of overstepping his bounds.

The analyst warned that allowing the issue to fade away would be a disservice to the Nigerian people, who deserve answers about the management of the country’s most valuable state-owned enterprise. He called on civil society organisations, the media, and other senators to keep the spotlight on NNPC Ltd. until all questions raised by Oshiomhole are fully addressed.

Kunle further argued that the controversy is not merely a political spat but a matter of national importance that touches on the economic survival of the country. He noted that NNPC Ltd. plays a central role in Nigeria’s economy, accounting for a significant portion of government revenue and foreign exchange earnings. Any mismanagement of its resources, he said, directly impacts the welfare of all Nigerians.

The analyst also linked the NNPC controversy to the broader challenges facing the country, including insecurity and economic hardship. He argued that transparency and accountability in the management of public resources are essential prerequisites for addressing these challenges effectively.

Kunle called on the Senate leadership to resist the temptation to sweep the issue under the carpet and instead ensure that Senator Oshiomhole’s concerns are thoroughly investigated. He also urged the public to remain engaged and demand answers from their elected representatives.

The reaction from the Senate leadership has been mixed. While some senators have expressed support for Oshiomhole’s concerns, others have accused him of grandstanding and attempting to embarrass the institution. The Senate Public Accounts Committee, which is responsible for scrutinising the accounts of government agencies, has not yet issued a formal response to the allegations.

NNPC Ltd. has also not issued an official statement responding to Senator Oshiomhole’s remarks. However, the company has previously defended its operations, stating that it is committed to transparency and accountability in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act.

As the controversy continues to generate debate across political and policy circles, the question remains whether the Senate will take concrete action or allow the matter to fade away. For now, Dan D. Kunle has added his voice to those demanding accountability, warning that the stakes are too high for Nigeria to look away.
