France launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Senegal, overcoming a difficult first-half performance before producing a dominant second-half display inspired by captain Kylian Mbappe.
The Group I encounter at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey tested the resolve of Didier Deschamps’ side, who entered the tournament among the leading contenders for the title. After struggling to find rhythm for much of the opening period, Les Bleus responded in emphatic fashion after the break, with Mbappe scoring twice and Bradley Barcola adding another to secure all three points.
The victory was historic for Mbappe, whose brace saw him become France’s all-time leading goalscorer, further cementing his place among the greatest players in the nation’s football history.
France began the match as overwhelming favourites, but Senegal quickly demonstrated why they remain one of Africa’s most respected football nations. The Lions of Teranga matched their opponents physically and tactically, creating some of the best opportunities of the first half.
The first major chance arrived in the 25th minute after Mbappe lost possession in midfield. Senegal immediately launched a rapid counterattack that caught the French defence off guard. Nicolas Jackson found space inside the penalty area and struck a low effort that beat goalkeeper Mike Maignan, only for the ball to crash against the base of the post before rolling agonisingly wide.
It was a warning sign that France failed to heed.
Senegal continued to threaten through the pace of Ismaila Sarr and the experience of Sadio Mane. Deep into first-half stoppage time, the African side squandered another golden opportunity when Sarr somehow volleyed over the crossbar from close range with the goal at his mercy.
The missed chance proved costly.
France emerged from the dressing room with renewed urgency and immediately began to impose themselves on the contest. Desire Doue, Michael Olise and Mbappe all tested Senegal’s defensive resolve within the opening minutes of the second half, forcing goalkeeper Edouard Mendy into action.
The momentum had clearly shifted, and France believed they should have been awarded a penalty shortly before the hour mark when Mane appeared to bring down Mbappe inside the area. Despite a lengthy VAR review and consultation with the pitch-side monitor, the referee surprisingly waved play on.
Mbappe, however, refused to let the controversial decision affect his concentration.
The breakthrough arrived in the 64th minute following a moment of quality from Michael Olise. Operating in a more central role after tactical adjustments from coach Didier Deschamps, Olise delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Mbappe. The French captain timed his run expertly before sweeping a first-time finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.
The goal transformed the atmosphere inside the stadium and gave France the confidence they had been searching for throughout the evening.
Senegal thought they had responded almost immediately when Nicolas Jackson powered the ball into the net moments later. Celebrations among the African supporters were cut short after the assistant referee raised his flag for offside, preserving France’s advantage.
With the match entering its closing stages, France began to dominate possession and territory. Their persistence was rewarded in the 82nd minute when substitute Bradley Barcola doubled the lead.
The move started with an intelligent forward pass from Adrien Rabiot, who spotted Barcola’s run behind the Senegal defence. The Paris Saint-Germain winger controlled the ball brilliantly before delicately lifting his finish over the advancing Mendy to make it 2-0.
The goal appeared to settle the contest, but there was still late drama to come.
Senegal reduced the deficit in the 88th minute through young forward Ibrahim Mbaye, who produced a moment of individual brilliance. The attacker unleashed a stunning strike that flew beyond Maignan and into the net, giving the African side renewed hope of an unlikely comeback.
Any hopes of a late revival were extinguished almost instantly.
Just two minutes later, Mbappe delivered the defining moment of the match. Receiving possession nearly 30 yards from goal, the France captain unleashed a spectacular long-range effort that sailed over Mendy and into the back of the net. Although the Senegal goalkeeper may feel he could have done better, the strike completed Mbappe’s brace and sealed a memorable victory.
The final whistle confirmed a deserved 3-1 win for France, who improved significantly after a disappointing opening 45 minutes. Deschamps will be encouraged by his team’s ability to adapt under pressure and find solutions when faced with a disciplined opponent.
For Senegal, the result was disappointing but their performance offered plenty of positives. They created chances, competed strongly and showed they have the quality to challenge for qualification from a highly competitive group.
France now turn their attention to their next fixture against Iraq, while Senegal face a crucial showdown with Norway in what could prove a decisive encounter in the race for the knockout stages.
For Mbappe, however, the night belonged entirely to him. A historic brace, a record-breaking achievement and three valuable points ensured the French superstar once again occupied centre stage at football’s biggest tournament.
