Umar Sadiq Weighs Super Eagles Future After Extended National Team Absence

Nigeria international Umar Sadiq has opened up on the possibility of retiring from international football, admitting that his prolonged absence from the Super Eagles has left him questioning whether he still has a future with the national team.

The Valencia striker, who has been one of Nigeria’s most recognizable forwards in European football over the past decade, revealed that he is carefully considering his next move after finding himself repeatedly overlooked for national team assignments despite delivering commendable performances at club level.

Sadiq’s comments have generated widespread discussion among Nigerian football supporters, many of whom remember the towering forward’s rise from youth football to becoming one of the country’s most promising attacking talents. While he has not officially announced his retirement from international football, his recent remarks suggest that the possibility is now firmly on the table.

The 29-year-old striker has not featured for the Super Eagles since November 2024 and has struggled to regain a place in the squad under head coach Eric Chelle. Although he was included in the squad for Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in early 2025, he failed to make an appearance in either match. Since then, invitations to subsequent national team engagements have not arrived.

His omission has surprised many football observers given his impressive form in Spain. During the 2025/26 season, Sadiq contributed significantly for Valencia, scoring crucial goals and providing valuable assists as the club battled through a challenging campaign in La Liga. His performances helped Valencia stabilize their position and avoid deeper relegation concerns, earning praise from supporters and football analysts alike.

Despite these contributions, opportunities with the Super Eagles have remained limited.

Speaking during an interview with Radio France Internationale Hausa, the former Almeria striker acknowledged that competition for places in Nigeria’s attack has become increasingly fierce. According to him, the coaching staff may have different tactical preferences and player profiles in mind, making it difficult for him to force his way back into contention.

Rather than expressing anger or frustration, Sadiq adopted a reflective tone. He noted that no direct communication had been made regarding his continued absence, leaving him to conclude that the technical crew may simply be pursuing a different direction.

His comments highlight the intense competition currently existing within the Super Eagles attacking department. Nigeria boasts an impressive pool of strikers, including Victor Osimhen, Tolu Arokodare, Cyriel Dessers, Paul Onuachu and several emerging talents who are making their mark in European football. With more young forwards continuing to emerge, securing a regular place in the national team has become increasingly challenging.

For Sadiq, however, the journey to this point has been anything but ordinary.

Born in Kaduna State, the striker’s football story began in northern Nigeria before his talent earned him opportunities abroad. Like many Nigerian footballers, he pursued his dream through determination and sacrifice, eventually moving to Europe at a young age.

His breakthrough came during his time with Nigeria’s Under-23 national team. Sadiq was one of the standout performers at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where the Dream Team secured a bronze medal for Nigeria. His goals, movement and physical presence attracted international attention and established him as one of the country’s brightest prospects.

That Olympic success opened doors to a series of opportunities across Europe. Over the years, Sadiq played in Italy, Serbia and Spain, gradually building a reputation as a hardworking striker capable of scoring important goals. His most productive spell came with Spanish side Almeria, where he emerged as one of the most feared forwards in the Segunda Division and helped the club secure promotion to La Liga.

His performances earned him a high-profile transfer to Real Sociedad, a move that many believed would elevate him to another level. Unfortunately, injuries disrupted his progress shortly after arriving at the club. A serious knee injury sidelined him for an extended period, slowing the momentum he had built and limiting his opportunities to showcase his abilities consistently.

Despite those setbacks, Sadiq demonstrated remarkable resilience. Through dedication and rehabilitation, he returned to action and worked his way back into top-flight football. His subsequent move to Valencia provided another platform to revive his career, and he responded with important contributions that reminded many of his quality.

At international level, however, consistency has proven more difficult to achieve. Since making his senior debut for Nigeria, Sadiq has earned a number of caps and represented the country in major competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations. While he has delivered moments of promise, injuries and fierce competition often prevented him from becoming a permanent fixture in the starting lineup.

Now approaching his 30th birthday, the striker finds himself at a crossroads.

Sadiq has indicated that he will wait until the start of the new football season before making a final decision regarding his international future. The period ahead will likely provide an opportunity for reflection as he evaluates both his club ambitions and his desire to continue pursuing a place in the national team.

For Nigerian football supporters, the situation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by professional athletes whose careers are shaped by competition, coaching decisions and changing tactical philosophies.

Whether Umar Sadiq ultimately decides to continue fighting for a return to the Super Eagles or chooses to step away from international football, his contribution to Nigerian football remains significant. From Olympic success to memorable performances across Europe, his journey reflects resilience, determination and a commitment to representing his country whenever called upon.

The coming months could determine the next chapter of that story.
