Professor Kithure Kindiki has been sworn in as Kenya’s new deputy president, replacing Rigathi Gachagua who was impeached by a two-thirds majority vote in the Kenyan parliament.
The impeachment charges against Gachagua included corruption, inciting ethnic divisions, and undermining the government.
Professor Kindiki, a strong ally of President William Ruto, served as his lawyer during his trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) which was eventually dismissed due to lack of evidence.
Kindiki has an impressive educational background, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from Moi University, a Diploma in Legal Studies from the Kenya School of Law, a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law & Democracy, and a PhD in International Law from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
A seasoned politician, Kindiki has held various positions including Interior Minister, Senator from Tharaka-Nithi County, Senate majority leader, and deputy speaker of the Senate.
He has also consulted for local and international organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Prof. Kindiki’s wife
Kindiki’s wife, Dr. Joyce Gatiria Njagi-Kithure, is a renowned senior lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nairobi and has been involved in various philanthropic efforts, particularly in empowering women.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Dr. Joyce stood proudly beside her husband, and Prof. Kindiki acknowledged her sacrifices for their family, saying, “I want to thank my wonderful wife, Joyce, who has sacrificed her career to raise our three children.”
Gachagua’s impeachment
The impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua was marred with controversy, with allegations of corruption and conflict of interest.
Gachagua denied the allegations, claiming most properties in question belonged to his late brother’s estate.
His lawyers argued the allegations were “false, ridiculous, or embarrassing.”
