ABUJA, Nigeria — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially handed over the interim National Control Centre to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), a significant step in the ongoing reforms of the country’s electricity sector aimed at enhancing grid management and operational efficiency.

The handover ceremony, which took place on Friday in Abuja, marks a major milestone in the transition process as Nigeria continues to implement the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023. The establishment of NISO as an independent entity is designed to ensure the impartial and efficient operation of the national grid, separating system operations from the commercial interests of the transmission company.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of TCN described the handover as a historic moment for the Nigerian electricity sector, noting that it reflects the government’s commitment to deepening reforms and improving the reliability of power supply. He emphasised that the interim control centre would serve as the nerve centre for grid operations, ensuring that electricity is generated, transmitted, and distributed in a manner that meets the needs of consumers.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator is expected to take full responsibility for grid operations, including scheduling, dispatch, and settlement functions, as well as ensuring the security and stability of the power system. The transition to an independent system operator is seen as a critical step towards attracting private sector investment and improving the overall performance of the electricity market.

The handover has been welcomed by industry stakeholders, who see it as a positive development for the sector. The Director-General of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission commended both TCN and NISO for their cooperation and professionalism in ensuring a smooth transition. He stressed that the success of the new arrangement would depend on the continued collaboration between all stakeholders in the sector.

As the interim control centre becomes fully operational under NISO, the focus will now shift to strengthening the technical and operational capacity of the new entity to ensure that it can effectively manage the complexities of the national grid. The government has also pledged to provide the necessary support to ensure that the transition delivers tangible benefits for consumers and the broader economy.
