KANO, Nigeria — Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to prevent the hoarding and diversion of subsidised fertiliser, ensuring that the commodity reaches genuine farmers in the state.

The governor made the call on Friday during a meeting with officials of the anti-graft agencies in Kano, where he expressed concern over reports that some unscrupulous individuals and groups were diverting subsidised fertiliser meant for farmers. He noted that such practices undermine food security and defeat the purpose of government intervention programmes.

Yusuf stated that the state government has been working to ensure that farmers have access to affordable fertiliser to boost agricultural productivity and ensure food security. However, he noted that the efforts were being undermined by those who hoard the commodity or divert it for personal gain.

The governor appealed to the anti-graft agencies to investigate and prosecute those found to be involved in the hoarding and diversion of fertiliser, stressing that the government would not tolerate any act that sabotages the agricultural sector. He also called on the agencies to work with the state government to strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.

The EFCC and ICPC officials assured the governor of their commitment to supporting the state government in the fight against fertiliser hoarding and diversion. They noted that the agencies would collaborate with the state government to ensure that the commodity reaches the intended beneficiaries.

Kano State is one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural states, and the government has been implementing various programmes to support farmers and boost food production. The call for anti-graft agencies’ intervention reflects the government’s determination to protect the interests of farmers and ensure food security in the state.
