Bayern Munich began the 2026/27 campaign with silverware after defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in an entertaining Franz Beckenbauer Supercup clash at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday night.
The German giants had to withstand a spirited second-half comeback from Dortmund, but first-half goals from Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise ultimately proved enough to secure Bayern another trophy. Fabio Silva pulled one back for the hosts in the 75th minute, while Dortmund missed a huge opportunity to equalise late in the game.
The atmosphere inside Signal Iduna Park reflected the importance of the occasion. With the Bundesliga champions facing the German Cup winners in a meeting between two of Germany’s biggest clubs, there was little feeling of this being merely a pre-season fixture. Both sides approached the contest with intensity, and the opening exchanges quickly produced the kind of competitive football expected from a Klassiker.
Dortmund started with purpose and created the first major opportunity of the night. Serhou Guirassy found himself in a promising position at the far post in the 13th minute, but he could not make the decisive connection. Bayern gradually settled into the contest, however, and Harry Kane soon reminded Dortmund of the threat he carries. The England captain tested Gregor Kobel from distance in the 27th minute, forcing the goalkeeper to scramble.
Just a minute later, Bayern found the breakthrough.
Nathaniel Brown, making his competitive debut for Bayern, became the unlikely hero. The youngster collected the ball from Michael Olise before unleashing a powerful finish that beat Kobel and sent Bayern into a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. It was a memorable way for Brown to announce himself on the biggest stage.
Dortmund tried to respond immediately and thought they had found an equaliser when Ramy Bensebaini’s glancing header found the net. The celebration did not last, however, as the goal was ruled out for offside.
Bayern remained dangerous whenever they moved forward, with Luis Diaz also forcing Kobel into a save after cutting inside and firing towards goal. Brown nearly doubled his personal tally shortly afterwards, but his effort went narrowly wide of the far post.
Then came the moment that gave Bayern complete control of the first half.
In stoppage time, Olise produced a moment of individual brilliance. The French winger picked up possession, drove forward and finished with the outside of his boot to put Bayern 2-0 ahead. It was a goal that demonstrated both his confidence and technical quality, leaving Dortmund with a mountain to climb before the interval.
Dortmund returned for the second half knowing that they needed to score quickly. Bayern, meanwhile, looked comfortable with their advantage and continued to threaten whenever space opened up.
The home side’s response was helped by the introduction of fresh attacking players. Giannis Konstantelios brought additional energy to Dortmund’s attack, while Fabio Silva also made an impact after coming off the bench.
Bayern had opportunities to extend their lead, including one involving Brown and Kane in the second half, but Dortmund eventually found the goal they desperately needed.
In the 75th minute, Fabio Silva pulled one back with a deflected strike. Suddenly, what had looked like a comfortable Bayern victory became a tense final quarter. Dortmund had renewed belief, while the home crowd sensed that an equaliser could still transform the match.
The closing stages became increasingly frantic. Silva came close to scoring again with a header that went straight at Manuel Neuer, while Jobe Bellingham almost caught the experienced Bayern goalkeeper in possession near his own goal. Neuer, however, recovered in time to prevent what could have been a costly mistake.
Bayern’s defensive resilience was then tested repeatedly as Dortmund pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The hosts were handed another setback in the 90th minute when Bensebaini was shown a red card for a poor challenge on Ismael Saibari.
Even with 10 men, Dortmund continued to search for one final opportunity, and it arrived deep into stoppage time. Maxi Beier was played through on goal with an excellent chance to level the score, but his finish flew over the crossbar from close range. It was the moment Dortmund will regret most, as the miss effectively ended their hopes of forcing the match into a dramatic conclusion.
When the final whistle sounded, Bayern Munich had done enough. They had scored twice in an impressive first half, survived Dortmund’s determined second-half assault and held on for a 2-1 victory.
The result also means Bayern begin the new season with the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, giving Vincent Kompany’s team an early statement of intent. Michael Olise was particularly influential, scoring one goal and assisting Brown for the opener, while Brown enjoyed an outstanding debut.
For Dortmund, there were encouraging moments, particularly after the introduction of their substitutes, but their failure to convert several important chances ultimately cost them. Guirassy missed an early opportunity, Bensebaini had a goal disallowed, and Beier’s late miss summed up a frustrating night for the hosts.
Bayern’s victory was therefore not simply about lifting the first trophy of the season. It was another reminder of the champions’ ability to manage pressure, punish mistakes and remain composed when an opponent threatens to fight back. On a night when Dortmund pushed them all the way, Bayern had just enough quality and experience to walk away from Signal Iduna Park as Supercup winners.
