Sevilla produced a stunning away performance on Saturday, defeating Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at San Mamés in a dramatic LaLiga encounter that was heavily influenced by an early red card for the hosts.
The victory continued Sevilla’s perfect start to the new campaign, while Athletic suffered a frustrating defeat in Edin Terzic’s first home match as manager. Sevilla were ruthless when opportunities arrived, making the most of Athletic’s defensive mistakes to secure all three points.
Yuri Berchiche Sent Off Early
The game changed dramatically in the 12th minute when Athletic defender Yuri Berchiche was shown a straight red card following a challenge on Sevilla’s Miguel Sierra. The dismissal left Athletic with 10 men for almost the entire match and forced Terzic’s side to reorganise.
Despite being reduced to 10 players, Athletic attempted to remain positive. However, Sevilla quickly capitalised on the numerical advantage.
Oso Puts Sevilla Ahead
Just three minutes after the red card, Oso opened the scoring in the 15th minute, giving Sevilla a crucial 1-0 lead.
The goal came after an error involving Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón, who lost possession under pressure. Oso reacted quickest to punish the mistake and put the visitors in front.
Athletic entered the interval behind but continued to show determination despite their numerical disadvantage.
Ejuke Doubles the Lead
Sevilla increased their advantage shortly after the restart when Chidera Ejuke scored in the 51st minute.
The Nigerian winger took advantage of the space available against a tiring Athletic defence and gave Sevilla a valuable two-goal cushion. The visitors were now firmly in control, while Athletic faced an increasingly difficult task trying to get back into the contest.
Isaac Romero Makes It 3-0
Sevilla effectively put the match beyond Athletic’s reach in the 57th minute, when Isaac Romero scored their third goal.
Oso, who had already opened the scoring, provided the assist as Sevilla exposed another gap in the Athletic defence. At 3-0, the Andalusian side looked destined to leave Bilbao with a comfortable victory.
Paredes Gives Athletic Hope
Athletic refused to surrender and finally pulled a goal back in the 70th minute through Aitor Paredes.
The defender’s goal gave the home supporters renewed hope, and Athletic continued to push forward in search of a remarkable comeback. However, Sevilla’s defensive organisation prevented the hosts from finding a second goal.
Although Athletic enjoyed significant possession and created opportunities, Sevilla proved considerably more clinical in front of goal. The visitors defended their advantage intelligently during the closing stages and secured a valuable three points.
Sevilla Make Strong Start
The result is an encouraging sign for Luis García Plaza’s Sevilla, who have now made a perfect start to the campaign. Their victory at one of Spain’s most difficult grounds also demonstrated their ability to remain composed in a highly emotional encounter.
For Athletic, the defeat will be particularly disappointing because of the circumstances surrounding Terzic’s first home game. The early dismissal fundamentally altered the contest, while defensive errors ultimately proved costly.
Nevertheless, Athletic showed character by continuing to attack with 10 men and reducing the deficit through Paredes.
