JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, the South African Football Players Union announced on Saturday, July 11.

The union described Adams’ death as a devastating loss after he proudly represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying “the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction” throughout the tournament. The statement added that his passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football community, and the country.

Paying tribute, the club said: “Death has cruelly stolen one of our own. It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer, but it will never take away the legacy Jayden Adams leaves behind. We will forever remember his humility, his extraordinary talent and the pride with which he represented South Africa.”

Adams began his professional career after becoming Stellenbosch FC’s first academy graduate to sign a senior contract in August 2020. At the 2026 World Cup, he featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches before appearing on the bench during the Round of 32 defeat to Canada.
