LONDON, United Kingdom — Premier League champions Arsenal have begun the 2026 summer transfer window steadily, securing two key first-team signings and sanctioning several departures as Mikel Arteta reshapes his squad ahead of the new season.
The Gunners have confirmed the permanent signing of defender Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported €52 million, following a successful loan spell at the Emirates last season. The Ecuadorian international is expected to bring quality, adaptability, and competition to Arsenal’s defence after delivering strong performances in the Bundesliga.
Arsenal have also completed the acquisition of goalkeeper Illan Meslier without a transfer fee following his departure from Leeds United. The French goalkeeper provides added depth and experience in goal and has signed a two-year deal with the option for an additional year. “I’m extremely happy. It’s a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England,” Meslier said after his move was confirmed.
While strengthening the squad, Arsenal have also allowed several players to depart during this transfer window. Polish international Jakub Kiwior has moved to Portuguese champions Porto for a deal worth £14.7 million plus potential add-ons. Goalkeeper Karl Hein has completed a £2.6 million transfer to Werder Bremen, and young defender Josh Nichols has exited the Emirates on a free transfer.
Arsenal are also open to offers for first-team players including Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Martinelli as they continue to refresh their attacking options. Trossard is reportedly set to join Besiktas for €20 million, with the move expected to be finalised after the World Cup. Jesus is valued at around £18-20 million, with Premier League suitors circling.
The club’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, is working on multiple deals to further strengthen Arteta’s squad, with a left-sided forward, midfielder, and centre-back all deemed necessary additions. Christos Tzolis of Club Brugge has emerged as a primary target to replace Trossard, with Arsenal close to finalising a £35 million agreement for the Greek international.
Arsenal have invested €52 million in new players while earning approximately €20 million through player sales, not including free transfers. With the transfer window open until September 1, Arteta and the recruitment team are expected to continue their activity as they build a squad capable of competing for major titles in the 2026-27 season.
