José Mourinho has officially returned to Real Madrid as the club’s head coach, 13 years after bringing his first spell at the Santiago Bernabéu to an end.
The Portuguese manager was formally presented on Tuesday during a private ceremony at Real Madrid’s training centre, Ciudad Real Madrid, with club president Florentino Pérez welcoming him back to the Spanish giants. Mourinho has signed a three year contract that will keep him at the club until June 30, 2029.
Unlike the grand public presentations traditionally associated with major Real Madrid appointments, Mourinho’s unveiling was held behind closed doors and without the usual media spectacle. The understated ceremony reflected the club’s desire to focus attention on the work ahead rather than the occasion itself.
Mourinho’s return is one of the most intriguing managerial comebacks in recent European football. The 63 year old previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, a period that produced major trophies, intense rivalries and some of the most memorable moments in modern Spanish football.
During his first spell, Mourinho guided Madrid to the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. His 2011/12 league campaign was particularly impressive, with Real Madrid collecting a record 100 points and scoring 121 goals as they ended Barcelona’s dominance of Spanish football.
Now, more than a decade later, Mourinho has been given another opportunity to restore Real Madrid to the top of Spanish and European football.
The timing of his return is significant. Real Madrid are coming off two trophyless seasons and are looking for a stronger identity and greater consistency. The club has also undergone significant changes during the summer transfer window, with several high profile additions arriving as Pérez seeks to rebuild a squad capable of challenging Barcelona domestically and competing for major European honours.
Mourinho has already begun working with the squad, having started preparations with the team during pre season. His first competitive assignment will come against Espanyol in Real Madrid’s opening La Liga fixture.
Speaking during his presentation, Mourinho made it clear that he sees his return as more than simply another coaching job.
The Portuguese manager described the occasion as more emotional than his first arrival at the club and stressed that his priority would be working for Real Madrid rather than focusing on individual personalities.
His message was centred on discipline, responsibility and collective commitment. Mourinho wants everyone connected to the first team to understand that representing Real Madrid requires a high level of professionalism every day.
That philosophy has been a defining feature of his career.
Mourinho became one of football’s most successful managers after making his name at Porto, where he sensationally won the Champions League in 2004. He subsequently managed Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma and Benfica.
His trophy cabinet includes league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, as well as two Champions League triumphs.
His return to Madrid also comes after a recent spell at Benfica, where he continued to demonstrate his reputation as a manager capable of handling high pressure environments.
Real Madrid will expect that experience to help Mourinho manage a dressing room filled with world class talent.
The Portuguese coach is also returning to a club that has changed considerably since his first tenure. The squad now contains a mixture of established stars and highly rated young players, while Real Madrid have invested heavily in strengthening different areas of the team.
Players such as Vinícius Júnior remain central to the club’s ambitions, while new arrivals are expected to give Mourinho additional tactical options.

His first spell ended in 2013 after three seasons filled with trophies, controversy and fierce competition with Barcelona. Now he has returned with greater managerial experience and another opportunity to build a team in his image.
The Portuguese coach has already made his intentions clear.
He wants hard work, responsibility and ambition to become central to the culture at Valdebebas.
The next few months will reveal whether the return of the self proclaimed “Special One” can produce another successful era at the Santiago Bernabéu.
