Wike: Adeleke Won Osun Election Because Tinubu Allowed Free, Fair Poll

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has said Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke emerged victorious in the recent governorship election because President Bola Ahmed Tinubu allowed the electoral process to remain free and fair.

Wike made the statement on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, while speaking during an inspection of flood affected areas in the Federal Capital Territory. His comments came three days after Adeleke defeated the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the keenly contested Osun governorship election.

The minister was reacting to claims that the Federal Government could have influenced the election in favour of the APC but chose not to interfere with the process.

Wike argued that the outcome of the election demonstrated that the Tinubu administration allowed the people of Osun State to exercise their democratic rights and choose their preferred candidate.

According to the minister, one of the clearest indications that the Federal Government did not manipulate the election was President Tinubu’s decision to congratulate Adeleke after the result was announced.

Wike questioned whether Adeleke could have defeated the APC candidate if the Federal Government had actually attempted to use its influence to determine the outcome.

The statement has generated fresh political debate, particularly because the Osun election took place at a time when political parties are already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party, secured 511,067 votes to defeat Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. The governor therefore won by a margin of 66,252 votes.

The result also showed a strong geographical performance by both major candidates. Adeleke won in 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11 local government areas.

The victory handed Adeleke another term in office and strengthened his position within Osun’s political landscape.

Wike, however, cautioned against interpreting the Osun governorship result as a direct prediction of the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

The FCT minister stressed that a state governorship election and a presidential election are different contests, with different candidates, political structures, alliances and voter considerations.

His warning is significant because the Osun result has already become a major reference point in discussions about the strength of the APC and opposition parties ahead of 2027.

Some opposition politicians have viewed Adeleke’s victory as evidence that the ruling party can be defeated at the polls, while APC supporters and other political observers have pointed to the unique political dynamics of Osun State.

Wike’s position is that the result should primarily be seen as evidence that voters were allowed to make their choice.

He also rejected the broader claim that the Federal Government routinely uses its political influence to determine electoral outcomes.

Drawing from his own political experience, Wike said politicians who have survived what he described as federal political pressure could testify that political contests cannot simply be explained through allegations of federal interference.

The minister’s comments are particularly notable given his own political relationship with the Tinubu administration.

Wike remains a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party but was appointed FCT minister by President Tinubu. His continued association with the Federal Government has generated disagreements within the PDP and among opposition supporters.

His latest comments further demonstrate his defence of the administration’s approach to electoral politics.

The Osun election itself attracted considerable national attention, partly because of the involvement of prominent political figures and the broader significance of the state in South West politics.

Adeleke’s victory also demonstrated the importance of grassroots mobilisation and the ability of political candidates to maintain strong local support.

For the governor, the election result now presents an opportunity to focus on governance rather than political competition.

Residents will expect his administration to consolidate ongoing programmes and address key issues including infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment and economic development.

The APC, meanwhile, will have to examine its performance and campaign strategy after failing to reclaim the state despite mounting a strong challenge.

Oyebamiji’s 444,815 votes showed that the contest was far from one sided, with the final margin reflecting a competitive election between the two leading political forces.

Wike’s remarks are therefore likely to remain part of the wider conversation about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.

The question of whether government influence affects elections has remained a sensitive issue in the country, particularly during closely contested polls.

For Wike, however, the Osun outcome provides an example of what can happen when voters are allowed to determine the result without federal interference.

As Nigeria moves closer to 2027, political parties will increasingly scrutinise the lessons from the Osun election.

The contest could influence campaign strategies, opposition alliances and discussions about electoral credibility.

For now, Adeleke has secured another mandate, while Wike has credited the Tinubu administration’s decision to allow what he described as a free and fair election for creating the conditions that enabled the incumbent governor to win.

The statement is certain to fuel further debate over the role of the Federal Government in state elections and what the Osun result could mean for Nigeria’s next major electoral contest.
