Jake Paul Rules Out Heavyweight Fights After Joshua Defeat Left Him with Broken Jaw

American boxer and social media personality Jake Paul has admitted that his venture into the heavyweight division was a costly lesson, revealing he has no intention of facing another heavyweight after suffering a brutal knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua that left him with a broken jaw.

The 29-year-old cruiserweight sustained serious facial injuries during his highly publicised clash with the former two-time unified heavyweight champion, requiring multiple surgeries and months of recovery. Looking back on the fight, Paul acknowledged that stepping into the ring against one of boxing’s hardest punchers was a gamble he will not repeat.

Speaking about his future plans, Paul made it clear that his focus has shifted away from heavyweight contests and back to the division where he believes he can realistically compete for championship honours.

“We will heal the broken jaw, come back and fight people my weight. I’m going for the cruiserweight world title,” Paul said as he outlined his ambitions after returning to full fitness.

The fight against Joshua attracted global attention because of the significant difference in size, experience and pedigree between the two men.

Although Paul had built a respectable boxing record by defeating several former mixed martial arts fighters and experienced boxers, many analysts questioned whether he was ready to face an elite heavyweight with Joshua’s power and championship background.

Those concerns proved well founded on fight night.

After surviving the opening rounds through movement and cautious tactics, Paul gradually began to feel the pressure as Joshua increased his aggression. The British star repeatedly found openings with powerful combinations before dropping Paul several times in the sixth round.

The referee eventually stopped the contest after Paul was unable to defend himself effectively, handing Joshua a convincing knockout victory.

The consequences extended well beyond the result.

Medical examinations confirmed that Paul had fractured his jaw, forcing him to undergo surgery during which doctors inserted titanium plates to stabilise the injury. The recovery process also required the removal of several teeth and restricted him to a liquid diet before he could gradually resume normal eating.

For several months, uncertainty surrounded Paul’s boxing future.

The injury was so severe that the American admitted there were moments when he feared he might never compete again. Doctors prohibited him from sparring while the fracture healed, delaying any plans for a return to the ring.

Despite those concerns, Paul says his motivation remains intact.

Rather than chasing lucrative crossover bouts against heavyweight stars, he now intends to rebuild his career in the cruiserweight division, where he believes his natural size and physical attributes give him a much stronger chance of competing for major titles.

The decision marks a significant change in direction for the former YouTuber, who has built his boxing career around high profile events and headline making opponents.

Paul also hinted that he could explore mixed martial arts in the future through his Most Valuable Promotions organisation, although boxing remains his immediate priority once he receives medical clearance to resume full training.

Meanwhile, Joshua’s victory strengthened his position as he continues his quest to return to the summit of the heavyweight division.

The former Olympic champion demonstrated the experience, patience and devastating punching power that once made him one of boxing’s dominant figures. He has since turned his attention to future heavyweight contests as he seeks another opportunity to challenge for world titles.

While critics argued that the contest was a mismatch from the outset, Paul insists he does not regret accepting the challenge. Instead, he views the defeat as an important learning experience that exposed the realities of competing against elite heavyweights.

Now fully focused on recovery, Paul hopes to return stronger and wiser, determined to pursue success against opponents closer to his own weight rather than risking another dangerous encounter with boxing’s biggest punchers.

For the American, the painful defeat to Joshua may have ended his heavyweight ambitions, but it has also provided a renewed sense of purpose. His next chapter will be built not on chasing spectacle, but on proving he can establish himself as a legitimate contender in the cruiserweight division.
