YENAGOA, Nigeria — The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested three ministry staff for allegedly stealing government equipment valued at approximately N500 million, including a generator and a forklift, authorities have confirmed.

The suspects, who are employees of the state government, were apprehended following an investigation into the disappearance of the equipment from a government facility. Police sources revealed that the stolen items included a heavy-duty generator and a forklift, along with other equipment meant for official use.

The police said the suspects had allegedly conspired to cart away the items and were caught after an intelligence-led operation tracked the equipment to a location outside the government premises. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects may have been involved in a larger racket targeting government property over a period of time.

The Bayelsa State Government has not yet issued an official statement on the incident, but sources within the government indicate that the administration is taking the matter seriously and will cooperate with the police to ensure that justice is served. The government is also said to be reviewing its asset management protocols to prevent future occurrences.

The arrest of the three suspects has raised concerns about the management of government assets in Bayelsa State. Residents and civil society groups have called on the government to conduct a comprehensive audit of all government equipment and to strengthen accountability mechanisms to prevent further theft and mismanagement.

The police have also confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that more arrests may be made as the probe continues. The command has urged members of the public with useful information to come forward to assist in the investigation.

The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of theft and mismanagement of public assets in Nigeria, where government property is often stolen or misused with impunity. Anti-corruption advocates have called for stricter penalties for those found guilty of stealing public property, as well as improved oversight and monitoring of government assets.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are being interrogated as investigations continue. The police have assured that all suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The command has also urged other public officials to desist from any form of theft or mismanagement of government property, warning that anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law.

For now, the suspects remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
