A routine medical examination that revealed dangerously high cholesterol levels became the turning point that completely changed the life of Nigerian marathon runner and Guinness World Records holder Adedayo Akinbode, transforming her from someone struggling with her health into one of the world’s most accomplished endurance athletes.
Today, Akinbode is celebrated globally for her extraordinary marathon achievements and her determination to promote Nigeria positively across the world. Yet, her remarkable story began with an alarming warning from her doctor that forced her to rethink her lifestyle and future.
Speaking about her inspiring journey, Akinbode recalled that she had never imagined becoming a marathon runner. At the time, she was battling obesity and elevated cholesterol levels, conditions that significantly increased her risk of developing serious heart related illnesses.
The diagnosis came during a routine annual medical check while she was working in the oil and gas industry. Doctors advised her to adopt healthier eating habits and embrace regular physical activity to reduce the risks associated with high cholesterol.
Like many people confronted with life changing medical advice, she initially found it difficult to make the recommended lifestyle adjustments.
Everything changed in 2013 when her employer introduced the Global Corporate Challenge, a workplace wellness initiative that encouraged employees to achieve at least 10,000 steps each day.
Although she could barely complete a one kilometre walk without becoming exhausted, she decided to accept the challenge and gradually began increasing her physical activity.
What started as daily walking soon developed into light jogging before eventually becoming regular running.
Akinbode credits much of her early progress to the encouragement she received from a friend who introduced her to the world of marathon running.
The discovery that only a tiny percentage of the world’s population successfully completes a full marathon became a powerful source of motivation.
Determined to prove to herself that she could achieve something extraordinary, she registered for her first marathon and never looked back.
Since completing her debut marathon in Dubai in 2014, Akinbode has gone on to compete in more than one hundred marathons across dozens of countries spanning every inhabited continent.
Her achievements eventually earned international recognition and a place in the Guinness World Records, making her one of Nigeria’s most celebrated long distance runners.
However, the road to success was far from easy.
Long before discovering marathon running, she survived a devastating domestic accident while heavily pregnant that left her with a broken leg.
The injury required surgery, with doctors inserting a metal plate and several pins to stabilise the fractured limb. She spent nearly two years using crutches and continued walking with difficulty long after the injury had healed.
Many family members and friends believed the injury meant she could never safely participate in long distance running.
Instead of allowing those doubts to define her future, Akinbode used them as motivation to push beyond her physical limitations.
Over the years, she has faced additional challenges while travelling internationally, including visa delays and immigration scrutiny in several countries.
Despite these obstacles, she has remained committed to using marathon running as a platform to present a positive image of Nigeria to the world.
According to Akinbode, every race represents an opportunity to challenge negative stereotypes and demonstrate the resilience, determination and excellence of Nigerians.
She proudly carries the Nigerian flag during many of her races, believing that sports can serve as a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy and national pride.
Beyond breaking records, the accomplished athlete has also dedicated herself to promoting long distance running within Nigeria.
She founded the Ile Ife Heritage Marathon, an initiative designed to encourage healthier lifestyles while attracting visitors to one of Nigeria’s most historic cities.
The event has continued to grow in popularity, drawing runners from different parts of the country and beyond while showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
Health experts say Akinbode’s story highlights the importance of regular medical checkups, particularly for adults who may unknowingly be living with conditions such as high cholesterol, hypertension or obesity.
High levels of low density lipoprotein, commonly known as bad cholesterol, can gradually build up in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular complications if left untreated.
Fortunately, many of these risks can be significantly reduced through healthy eating, regular exercise, weight management and medical treatment where necessary.
For Akinbode, running became much more than a form of exercise.
It evolved into a lifelong passion, a mission to inspire others and a platform for promoting Nigeria across the globe.
Her remarkable transformation serves as a powerful reminder that life’s greatest opportunities can sometimes emerge from its most difficult moments.
What began as a frightening medical diagnosis ultimately became the catalyst for an extraordinary journey that has seen her break records, inspire thousands and redefine what is possible through determination, discipline and unwavering commitment to personal growth.
