Villarreal committed a rare defensive error of their own, allowing Mauro Júnior to seize possession and calmly reduce the deficit with a composed finish. The Brazilian’s goal made it 2-1 and briefly lifted the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Any momentum generated by the goal disappeared almost immediately.
Less than a minute later, another costly mistake from goalkeeper Kovar proved decisive. His misplaced pass gifted possession back to Villarreal, allowing Cabanes to capitalize with a clinical finish that restored the visitors’ two-goal cushion at 3-1 and effectively ended the contest.
While the scoreline reflected Villarreal’s superiority after halftime, there were still positives for PSV to take from the encounter. Kovar produced several outstanding saves despite his costly errors, while Van Bommel’s return from a lengthy injury absence represents an important boost ahead of the competitive season.
For Villarreal, the victory highlighted the team’s attacking quality and high-intensity pressing under preseason preparations. Mikautadze was undoubtedly the standout performer, constantly troubling PSV’s defense before eventually opening the scoring. Thiam and Cabanes also impressed by taking their chances with confidence as the Spanish side demonstrated greater composure in front of goal.
