President Bola Ahmed Tinubu makes new appointments

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) cautioned the opposition parties in the country, not to get overly excited about the loss of incumbent vice president Kamala Harris in the US presidential election, claiming that President Bola Tinubu will win the majority of votes once more in 2027.

In a dramatic political comeback that shocked the entire world, former President Donald Trump defeated Harris to win the US poll on Wednesday.

The 78-year-old business tycoon was the oldest individual to win the White House and the 47th president.

In response, Mr. Obiora Ifo, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, called the internationally watched US election a real test of democracy.

Mr. Ifoh said it was interesting to observe how the American electorate disregarded the incumbency issue, which is still a “big deal” in Africa, and particularly Nigeria’s electoral system.

He added that the Independent National Electoral Commission has a lot to learn from the recently completed poll.

The spokesman for the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Ladipo Johnson, also responded, saying that the US electoral system is sophisticated and has advanced significantly.

He further questioned when Nigeria would put an end to the period of tight-tight leaders who used the security apparatus and power of incumbency to intimidate the opposition.

However, Mr. Bala Ibrahim, the APC’s national publicity director, cautioned the opposition against being overly excited by the US election’s results, pointing out that the two nations’ political systems differ.

Mr. Ibrahim reportedly said that the incumbency factor doesn’t always work in situations where the populace speaks with one voice.

This, he claimed, was the case in 2015 when former President Muhammadu Buhari defeated incumbent Goodluck Jonathan.

According to the APC spokesperson, Nigerians will cheer and encourage the president to keep up the economic changes he has implemented by the time they start to reap the benefits.

The politician cautioned that the opposition would not be allowed to control the nation’s affairs, even though the party is not sleeping on the issue.

According to report, he pointed out that many of the oppositions were still dealing with leadership problem.

He said: “With the way and manner this administration of APC is working assiduously, bringing in new reforms and changes that are painful initially, we will reap the gains and fruits in the long run.

“We expect to start seeing the fruits of these reforms right around the time of the election.

“That should be around 2026 and 2027.

“It is at that time people will start clapping for the party and the president”, he added.

He went on: “It will be almost impossible for someone to come from the outside, particularly an outsider that has failed the country before; an outsider that cannot contain its own crisis, to think of defeating the incumbent.

“It will be very difficult.

“The APC and the president are very much aware of this expectation and shenanigans of the opposition.

“But it is not to say that the party and the president are sleeping.

“No, they are strategising ahead.

“So, when we get to the bridge, we will see who have the strongest stride to cross it.

“And I assure you, the APC will not be found nothing.

“It will not be caught napping”, he added.
