ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has entered into a partnership with Yakubu Gowon University to strengthen diplomatic training, policy research and capacity building as part of efforts to enhance Nigeria’s foreign service and international engagement.
The collaboration is expected to promote academic excellence and professional development through specialised programmes designed to equip students, diplomats and public officials with the knowledge and skills required for effective diplomacy and international relations.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the partnership reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to developing a highly skilled diplomatic workforce capable of advancing Nigeria’s interests on the global stage. They noted that diplomacy continues to play a vital role in promoting national security, economic cooperation, regional integration and international partnerships.
Under the agreement, both institutions are expected to cooperate in areas including diplomatic education, strategic policy research, leadership development and professional training. The initiative will also encourage knowledge exchange between academics, diplomats and policy experts while supporting research on emerging global issues affecting Nigeria and Africa.
The Ministry explained that strengthening institutional collaboration with universities is essential to preparing future diplomats for the increasingly complex international environment. It added that participants in the programme would benefit from exposure to contemporary diplomatic practices, international law, conflict resolution, multilateral negotiations and foreign policy analysis.
Yakubu Gowon University welcomed the partnership, describing it as an opportunity to expand its contribution to national development through research, innovation and human capital development. The institution expressed its readiness to provide academic expertise that will support evidence-based policymaking and strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic capacity.
Education and foreign policy analysts have long advocated stronger links between universities and government institutions, arguing that academic research can provide valuable insights for addressing international challenges while improving public sector performance.
The collaboration is also expected to facilitate conferences, seminars, workshops and exchange programmes aimed at encouraging dialogue on regional and global issues. Officials from both institutions expressed optimism that the initiative would contribute to producing a new generation of professionals equipped to represent Nigeria effectively in international organisations, bilateral engagements and multilateral negotiations.
