33-Year-Old Man Arrested For Allegedly Setting Wife Ablaze Over Burnt Clothes In Kogi

A 33-year-old man, identified as Jacob Irewa, has been arrested by the Kogi State Police Command after allegedly setting his wife, Berida, on fire during a domestic dispute in Lokoja.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Oworo Estate in Lokoja, following an argument between the couple.

According to reports, the disagreement began after Berida allegedly burnt some of her husband’s unused clothes without his permission.

The situation reportedly escalated when Jacob went to his motorcycle, retrieved petrol and allegedly threatened his wife before setting her on fire.

Berida survived the incident and was rushed to Honey Gold Hospital, where she is said to be receiving treatment and is currently in stable condition.

The suspect was reportedly arrested shortly after the incident by police officers.

During questioning, Jacob allegedly admitted to setting his wife ablaze, according to the police.

The Kogi State Police Command has condemned the incident, describing domestic violence as unacceptable and reaffirming its commitment to protecting victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.

The police said the investigation is ongoing, with further steps expected before the suspect is charged in court.
