OSOGBO, NIGERIA — Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has expressed heartfelt appreciation to Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi for his call for a peaceful and credible electoral process ahead of the Osun State governorship election.

In a post shared on X, Obi urged political stakeholders, security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and voters to prioritise peace, neutrality, and transparency throughout the electoral process. He also called on the people of Osun to reject violence and ensure that their votes reflect their genuine choice.

“The people of Osun must be allowed to vote freely, safely, and without intimidation. Their votes must be counted transparently, protected faithfully, and announced according to the genuine will of the electorate,” Obi wrote.

“Let Osun demonstrate to Nigeria, and indeed the world, that political competition can be intense without degenerating into violence; that disagreement can exist without hatred; and that power can change hands through ballots rather than blood.”

Responding to Obi’s statement, Davido took to his own social media platform to express gratitude, acknowledging the former Anambra governor’s commitment to democratic values and the integrity of the electoral process. The singer, who actively campaigned for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, during the election, described Obi’s call as a “necessary reminder” that elections should be about the will of the people rather than fear and manipulation.

“Thank you, Peter Obi, for standing for what is right,” Davido wrote in his response. “We need more leaders who speak truth and call for peace. Osun has spoken, and democracy has won.”

Obi’s call for peace came amid heightened tensions in the lead-up to the August 15 governorship election, which saw Governor Ademola Adeleke secure re-election after a keenly contested poll. The election was largely peaceful, though isolated incidents of violence and allegations of vote-buying were reported in some areas.

The former presidential candidate’s emphasis on transparency and non-violence resonated with many Nigerians, who have grown weary of electoral malpractice and post-election violence that has marred previous polls. His message was widely shared and praised across social media platforms, with many echoing his sentiment that elections should be a celebration of democracy rather than a source of conflict.

Davido’s acknowledgment of Obi’s contribution adds to the growing chorus of voices commending the former presidential candidate for his statesmanlike approach to electoral matters. The singer, who has become increasingly vocal on political issues, has used his platform to advocate for good governance and democratic accountability.

As Osun State settles into the aftermath of the election, the message of peace and unity remains paramount. Obi’s words serve as a reminder that while political competition is healthy, it must be conducted within the bounds of the law and with respect for the sanctity of the electoral process. For Davido and millions of other Nigerians, the call for peace is not just a slogan but a prerequisite for the nation’s democratic future.
