ONDO, NIGERIA — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for providing direct financial assistance to victims of flooding in Ondo State, describing the intervention as a practical response to the hardship suffered by affected residents.
The cash relief was distributed to 1,000 beneficiaries across six local government areas in Ondo South Senatorial District, with the intervention aimed at helping households affected by the devastating impact of flooding.
The beneficiaries were drawn from Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Okitipupa, Odigbo, Irele and Ileoluji/Okeigbo local government areas. The distribution covered 220 beneficiaries in Ilaje, 170 in Ese-Odo, 160 each in Okitipupa and Odigbo, 130 in Irele and another 130 in Ileoluji/Okeigbo.
The intervention is expected to provide immediate financial relief to families whose livelihoods and properties were affected by flooding.
For many residents in flood-prone communities, flooding can result in the destruction of homes, agricultural produce and personal belongings, while also disrupting businesses and access to essential services.
The direct cash assistance therefore provides beneficiaries with resources they can use according to their most urgent needs, whether for food, household expenses, recovery efforts or other immediate necessities.
The APC chieftain praised Tunji-Ojo for what he described as a demonstration of responsive leadership, particularly because the assistance was delivered directly to affected residents rather than being limited to promises of future intervention.
The minister, who is from Ondo State, has remained a prominent figure in the state’s political and development discussions. His supporters have frequently highlighted his involvement in programmes aimed at improving the welfare of residents and advancing the interests of communities in the state.
The latest intervention has consequently been presented by his supporters as another example of the Renewed Hope Agenda being translated into direct assistance for vulnerable Nigerians.
The APC chieftain’s commendation also comes amid continued political activities within the party in Ondo State. Supporters of President Bola Tinubu have been strengthening mobilisation structures ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Tunji-Ojo increasingly featuring in political discussions within the state.
Earlier this year, APC figure Agboola Kelly described Tunji-Ojo as one of the strongest performers in Tinubu’s cabinet, praising his leadership of the Ministry of Interior and identifying him as an important political figure in Ondo State.
More recently, tensions within the Ondo APC have also placed Tunji-Ojo at the centre of political discussions, with some party elders describing him as important to the party’s political future in the state.
However, the flood-relief intervention has a humanitarian dimension that extends beyond party politics. For the affected families receiving assistance, the immediate concern is recovering from the consequences of the disaster and rebuilding their lives.
Flooding remains a recurring challenge in several Nigerian communities, particularly during periods of intense rainfall. Beyond immediate displacement, floods can destroy farmlands, contaminate water sources, damage roads and leave families facing significant financial losses.
Direct financial support can help affected households meet urgent needs while longer-term measures are pursued to reduce vulnerability to future flooding.
The distribution exercise was coordinated by former House of Representatives member Mayowa Akinfolarin, with beneficiaries selected across the six local government areas in Ondo South.
The intervention has consequently attracted attention because of its direct approach to supporting individuals rather than providing assistance solely through broad community projects.
Supporters of the minister say such interventions demonstrate the importance of leaders maintaining contact with communities and responding to their immediate challenges.
For residents affected by the flooding, however, the cash assistance is only one part of the recovery process. Longer-term measures, including improved drainage, flood control infrastructure, environmental management and stronger emergency-response systems, remain important for preventing repeated losses.
The APC chieftain’s commendation nevertheless underscores the political and social significance of the intervention, particularly in a state where flooding continues to affect vulnerable communities.
As beneficiaries begin using the financial assistance to address their most pressing needs, supporters hope the intervention will provide some relief from the economic pressure caused by the floods.
The initiative ultimately places the focus on direct support for affected families while reinforcing Tunji-Ojo’s growing profile in Ondo State politics and public affairs. For the 1,000 beneficiaries, the immediate priority remains recovering from the disaster, while for his supporters, the intervention represents evidence of a leadership approach centred on responding directly to citizens’ needs.
