The newly elected chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Osborn Nweze Umahi, has pledged to reject his salary and allowances throughout his tenure.

Umahi, 28, said the money would instead be used for the benefit of residents of the local government.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate made the pledge after winning Saturday’s local government election in the state.

“I will neither accept any salary nor allowance as Ohaozara LGA chairman. I am coming to serve and not to enrich myself,” he said.

Umahi said his decision was motivated by his desire to focus on serving the people rather than making personal financial gains from public office.

He also promised to prioritise infrastructure development, youth empowerment, economic opportunities and improved service delivery across communities in Ohaozara.

The chairman-elect is the son of the Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor, Senator David Umahi.

During his campaign, the younger Umahi presented himself as a new-generation politician, saying he intended to bring his private-sector experience into public administration.
