Nigerian tech entrepreneur Eric Gugua has expressed frustration over the travel restrictions he says come with holding a Nigerian passport.
Gugua said he has missed opportunities that could have had a significant impact on his career because of the difficulty Nigerians often face when travelling to countries that require visas.
He particularly pointed to an upcoming blockchain conference in London, saying he would be unable to attend despite the event taking place the following week.
According to him, attending such an event would require him to begin the UK visa application process months ahead and provide extensive documentation.
“I’ve missed life-changing opportunities because I have a Nigerian passport,” Gugua said, expressing his disappointment over a system he believes limits access to international opportunities.
His comments highlight the wider frustration among Nigerian professionals and entrepreneurs who need to travel internationally for conferences, networking, business opportunities and other career-related activities but must first navigate visa requirements.
For many travellers, the uncertainty surrounding visa applications can also make short-notice international trips difficult, particularly when events are announced close to their scheduled dates.

While Nigerians can travel visa-free or obtain visas on arrival in some countries, destinations such as the United Kingdom require Nigerian passport holders to secure a visa before travelling.
